Sleep does more for us than recharge our bodies, it is important to our mental health as well... Deep sleep is important for us to function normally, and absolutely essential for our bodies to heal after an injury.... Studies have shown that the cells in our body increase production and reduce breakdown while we are in a state of deep sleep.... When we are sick our bodies produce Cytokines, powerful sleep-inducing chemicals, it is believed this is why we are sleepy when we are fighting off infections... The body conserving its energy and resources to attack the unwanted invader...
Sleep, its believed also resets the circuits in the brain, backing up information much as we do with our computers.... Routing and rerouting circuits, saving newly acquired information and solidifying routines..... Depriving ourselves of sleep can cause the board to short circuit and our computer to run slow.... Sleep then is essential for someone healing from a combination of infection and injury, such as dad... Although we would like him to be more alert with us, interacting with us, working on his exercises and speech..... He needs to sleep for his body to build cells and fight back, and his brain a chance to reset itself... Perchance to dream.....
So we sit as his side, holding his hand as he sleeps...... Hoping he will finally get the deep sleep that will help his body heal and help his brain make those essential connections... So we may have him, all of him with us... Not just the coveted moments here and there when Dad comes through!!!!!
